Explore this special place called Amami, whose silk production and lush, biodiverse landscapes speak to a storied past and an important future. This is an unusual blend of experiences that will leave you inspired by the craftsmanship of the Japanese people and in awe of the surrounding natural beauty.
Begin your tour at Oshima Tsumugi-mura village, where you will discover the art and manufacturing of Oshima Tsumugi silk -- a fabric that is one of the most sought-after luxury products in Japan. This traditional textile can be traced back more than 1,300 years. Its incredibly detailed craft starts with white silk thread and uses the traditional practice of mud-dyeing to create a work of art.
The Amami Nature Observation Forest is home to animals, plants and birds found only on Amami Island. A specialized guide leads you on an enchanting exploration of the lush forest. Walk along beautiful paths to encounter endemic flora and fauna. Take in the magnificent ocean views from the observatory.
At the Amami Oshima Distillery, enjoy a guided tour, learn about the intricate steps of the production process, and discover the secrets behind the renowned spirits made here.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant before you return to the pier.
Please note:
Tour requires one hour of walking in Amami Nature Observation Forest. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough walking tracks with many steps. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Wear long pants and long sleeves, and bring rain gear. Bring a backpack to stow any layers you shed. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Tour operates weather permitting. At the distillery, you will not view the production process for sanitary reasons. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Tour sequence may vary. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration.
